An important discourse from the Majjhimanikāya (MN 26) in which the Buddha talks about his decision to go forth, his practice while a Bodhisatta, his Awakening and decision to teach. The discourse closes with a supplementary teaching on the dangers inherent in the five strands of sense pleasure, and how Māra has control over anyone subject to them; and the freedom to be obtained by attaining states where Māra's range doesn't reach.

This work gives a selection of verses that are recited when worshipping the Triple Gem; and a collection of discourses that are popularly used as Safeguards. Part of the chants are meant to be recited every day, and part rotate on a weekly basis. The system for the chanting is as follows: first there is an everyday Pūjā (which will depend on what is being offered). Then the daily Parittaṁ section begins, at the end of the chants for the day there is meditation, and when finished you can...

The Mahāvaṁsa is a well-known Chronicle from Sri Lanka that has seen a number of translations into English, most famously by Wilhelm Geiger. It tells the story of the Kings of Sri Lanka, and the establishment of Buddhism in that country, and the support and challenges the religion has received down the ages. What is little known to the general public is that there is a secondary version of the text, which its editor chose to call the Extended Mahāvaṁsa. This text is almost twice as long...

In the presentation here I have given an analysis of the metres before each verse. This is then followed by five verses in Vatta metre which encourage the...

This venerable poet flourished during the Kotte period of Sri Lankan history, which saw a revival of Sinhala literature, and is the best known among his literary works, both for its remarkable poetic excellence and the vast impact it has made on the lives of the Buddhists ever since it was composed. Couched in the classical Sinhala metre abounding in alliteration, the poem is a perfect blend of sound and...

This is a chanting of 68 of the final verses from the Mahāvamsa. It was customary in the Medieval period to finish each chapter with a flourish by including a verse written in one of the Classical metres. This collection serves to provide examples of those metres, and they have now been read in to accompany the text , so that students can get a better understanding of the underlying rhythms of the metres used in the Medieval texts.

This is a reading of one of the earliest Buddhist texts, the Pārāyanavagga (The Way to the Beyond) in the Pāḷi Canonical language, which forms part 5 of the Suttanipāta (KN 5). The text falls into three clearly discernible sections. The first form the Vatthugāthā, the Introductory Verses; this is followed by the Pucchā, or Questions, in which are recorded, mainly in verse, 16 dialogues between the Buddha and a group of brāhmaṇa meditation masters; and thirdly, there is a fitting...
